This is a selection of paper art that I have found to inspire me greatly, from the form to the colour and the skill involved this art is amazing it gives me something to aspire to.

This rather impressive paper design has been created by Julene Harrison, it's not just the design of this piece that impressed me it is also the skill that goes into creating something like this, it takes a lot of accuracy to cut something like this out without making a mistake. It's an unusual quote that accompanies the design, it's thought provoking ( it took me a while to understand it ), it's homely like the aesthetics suggest.

Yulia Brodskaya's artwork opened my eyes to the art of paper curling. I'd seen some paper curling art before, but never to this standard, she has been so creative with a seemingly mundane form of craft, I also love the type she has chosen to use, it almost appears as though the paper has grown over the top and around the words.

Peter Callesen is the artist behind this intricate design and many others. The skeleton is cut from just one piece of paper, the skill involved in this mini sculpture is breathtaking.

This work has been created by Alec Tree, he was at the New Designers exhibition last year, I was blown away by his artwork. Unfortunately seeing it online doesn't do it justice; each different colour has been individually cut out then layered to create a 3D / 2D piece of art work, his choice of fun content and colour makes his artwork almost perfect for my demographic.

This beautiful art work is created by Scott Campbell. It's made entirely from 1 dollar notes; a wedge of notes has been clamped and glued together then cut into with an amazing design like the one you see before you now.

When researching other artists that used paper as their medium, I came across Julien Vallee. His designs are not abstract like Jen Stark. Put together they create an image, he somehow gives his designs movement / life.

 

This design is particularly inspirational because of it's content ( use of a book ). With imagery exploding from the book it is quite similar to the design I had already previously created ( it must be said that I had the idea for my initial design before i saw Julien Vallee's artwork )

Again, much like Stark's art, Vallee's work is ever more attractive because of his use of colour. I believe colour will play a very important part in my design, it is another resource ( a very important one ) that I can use to appeal to my demographic.

We can see in this photograph that once again Vallee has bought his art to life through his bold use of colour and form. 

After researching many other forms of at and design, an idea began to form ( at last ). 

The idea began when I was researching art that uses bright colours; Jen Stark's art work jumped out at me, her use of bright colours and initiative design was a breath of fresh air.

Jen Stark's art is created with coloured paper,  delicately cut with a scalpel resulting in some beautiful paper sculptures. I have taken a great deal of inspiration from her colours, and greatly appreciate the care and skill that is needed to create such a piece of art work. My initial ideas soon followed.

This idea was to create a sculpture created mainly from paper. In the corner of this diagram would be a book standing and splayed open, an illustration of eyes ( which I so like to draw ) would represent the expressions / emotions of a person reading a book. From the splayed open pages would come many paper cut images, the images would represent different facilities that can be found at the library. I initially decide that 3 posters would be quite accurate as the images would be designed and made by me alone, each sculpture would contain as many images as possible to create a small series of aesthetically exciting posters. I came to understand that just three posters would not be adequate so I decided to explore other possible routes.

Although I have remained adamant that I would like to create a design with the use of screen printing, I have decided that I must keep an open mind, if I come across another medium that is more suitable for my designs I will be willing to use it.

With my chosen advertising media being Posters I decided to find posters that inspire me, suitable for my demographic in a style that is either in past or present fashion. When searching the library for a book that suited my needs I came across a book documenting posters of the  60's.  A common theme of the posters is that they're forms are raw, they have been created by hand, they don't have the same generic computer generated images of perfection that we are used to today. The 'human imperfections of the designs are what make them so aesthetically pleasing. 

I like this poster because of it's simple use of colours, the range of hand drawn type and the media used to create the design. A biro has been used to create the majority of the image, it's unusual almost unheard of to see a poster made almost entirely from biro pen.

This image was created by Wes Wilson  in 1967. I particularly like the way the text appears to flow with that of the images hair. The image could be interpreted (for my purposes) as the illustrations thoughts appearing in the form of text from the back of her head. The only flaw in this design and others similar to this is that the text is almost unreadable, at least it takes a while to decipher. My understanding of a poster is that it must be easy to read in passing; this is something I shall take into consideration when designing my own posters.

On a recent visit to a Chinese restaurant I found some print work I rather liked on the paper chopstick packet. It was the image of the dragon and the phoenix that first attracted me to the packet, but then when I turned it over it was what I saw gave me an idea. The back of the packet has instructions as to how you use your chopsticks (it's a simple 3 step guide), the idea this gave me was to design a satirical step by step guide for how to read a book. I think this could appeal to my demographics sense of humor, but it could be in danger of becoming too sarcastic, this could dissuade rather than persuade people to join the library. Any comments and criticisms would be gratefully received.

My initial theme for my project was to create posters heavily influenced by graphic novels, I have been advised that I should concentrate more on literary novels, I will attempt to do so although I would still like to somehow incorporate the aesthetics of graphic novels.

The artist Linzie Hunter has used quotes from junk mail to create these rather witty posters.

I like how the posters have been quite clearly hand made, rather than using generic typefaces she has made the words her own. At first glance the posters appear fun and innocent, that is until you read the content, they are deceptively tongue in cheek.

These are some of the smaller details that I particularly liked about comics. 

I liked this title, its attempting to appear futuristic ('2000AD and Tornado' are set far in the future) although it still has a hint of the aesthetics of the 80's.  

I liked the imagery of the hands on this cover, the way they have been illustrated gives them the appearance that they are alive. 

 
These are background images. I liked these in particular because of the simple use of just two colours (blue and yellow). Where they have been overlaid they give the appearance of three (blue, yellow and green).
